TSP art is a type of line art based on the Traveling Salesman Problem. An image is first discretized into black points on a white background. The points are then treated as “cities” in the TSP problem. An approximate solution to the TSP problem is calculated and drawn. The result is striking approximation to the original image. Remarkably, the path never crosses itself. Read more here.

Kill Math makes math more meaningful

After a certain point in math education, like some time during high school, the relevance of the concepts to the everyday and the real world seem to fade. However, in many ways, math lets you describe real life better than you can with just words. Designer Bret Victor hopes to make the abstract and conceptual to real and concrete with Kill Math.

Principia Mathematica Journalistica
I can’t count how many times I’ve heard “Oh, I’m not a numbers person” or “I don’t like math — that’s why I’m a journalist.” Unfortunately, I used to agree with that sentiment, but for the past few years it’s annoyed the heck out of me.
Let’s gather some folks of various backgrounds and inclinations (or disinclinations) toward math and compile a list of the most important concepts and skills with the aim of increasing journalistic numeracy.
Greg Linch didn’t like math in grade school (except sometimes). Now he kicks himself and wants to learn more practical and applied math concepts.
His partner in crime for this session is Daniel Bachhuber, who owned his AP calc test, but doesn’t do math anymore.
