Local news sites fold. But is that a problem?
Susan Mernit of Oakland local cites a study by J-Lab showing that 50% of the local sites they tracked have folded.   My question: is that actually a problem? Many of the institutions that journalists revere are over a century old.  But that doesn’t mean that perpetual existence for its own sake should be a goal for any startup, including a news startup.  susanmernit: “Of some 1,200 sites...

designaday: One of the questions in my survey asked what languages respondents were proficient in. I categorized the languages by type and turned the responses into a treemap with the help of Many Eyes. As you can see, client side languages are the most popular, with HTML and CSS leading the way. That…

Datawrapper, a project by DataStory →
jochmann: Yay, more automated creation of visualization! You may remember that we are still waiting for visual.ly to open their lab and release the kraken. Erm, I meant their creation tool. Well, here’s a working alternative for you to check out. It’s free, too. I’ve seen some of the results embedded on German news sites and they looked decent enough. The tool creates solid charts and graphs,...

tradereads: GitHub’s geektastic 14,000-square-foot loft mirrors its mission: to democratize computer programming. GitHub.com is best thought of as Facebook for geeks. Instead of uploading videos of your cat, you upload software. Anyone can comment on your code and add to it and build it into something better. The trick is that it decentralizes programming, giving everyone a new kind of control....

gemstonegames: After the first unit, at least.  Enter Udacity, an online school dedicated to computer science.  It’s very new, and doesn’t actually offer a degree, but its got interesting material, and does a good job of mimicking a university setting, even going so far as to give you grades for homework assignments, as well as a final exam.  There are currently two courses; one that focuses on...

Github wants to teach kids how to code →
huertanix: Here at GitHub, we think it’s important to contribute to our future. Since kids will eventually grow up (so we hear) we think it’d be awesome to teach them how to code. We’re working with CoderDojo to bring their awesome kid-code-teaching classes to the US. Similar to an idea I failed to find funding for in 2011.
